Geenex Power Proposes Small Modular Reactor Project in Amherst County, Virginia
Geenex Power, a North Carolina-based developer, is planning to construct a small modular reactor (SMR) plant in the eastern part of Amherst County, Virginia. The project, named 'Beck Creek Energy,' is currently in its initial stages, with environmental studies actively underway. Geenex selected Amherst County due to its strategic proximity to the Joshua Falls substation, located across the James River in Campbell County, and the presence of local technology partners such as BWXT and Framatome. According to Delany Bolton, development project manager for Geenex, this location offers a viable opportunity for successful interconnection into the existing grid and provides the necessary infrastructure and land area to support an SMR or advanced nuclear reactor of this scale. The proposed SMR is an advanced nuclear power plant designed to be more compact and inherently safer than traditional nuclear facilities. The project is projected to generate 650 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power hundreds of thou...
