Report Highlights Mental Health Challenges for Young People Not in Employment or Education
A recent report by former Labour minister Alan Milburn reveals that one in five young people who are not in employment, education, or training (Neet) suffer from mental ill health. The report highlights that four in five young people claiming health-related Universal Credit benefits cite mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions as their main barrier to employment. The findings suggest a significant challenge for employers and the government in addressing these barriers. Lyndsey Denning, chief people officer at Reconomy, emphasized the need for employers to create supportive environments for young people with mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions. Neil Greenberg, president of the Society of Occupational Medicine, stressed the importance of employment in improving mental health and wellbeing. The report calls for better workplace support structures, including occupational health input, to help young workers thrive.
