Global Race Intensifies to Unlock Hidden Hydrogen Reserves, Promising Energy Transformation
Countries worldwide are actively pursuing the discovery and extraction of natural hydrogen deposits, a development that could significantly alter the global energy landscape. A recent study from China reported record-breaking levels of hydrogen seepage in the Sichuan Basin, with purity levels between 97.33% and 98.24%. This discovery marks the highest recorded natural hydrogen concentration in China and is among the few globally exceeding 98.00% purity. Similarly, in the Philippines, private companies are focusing on significant hydrogen seeps, with energy startup Koloma suggesting the nation could be central to a geologic hydrogen revolution due to its large natural hydrogen seeps. These efforts follow a U.S. Department of Energy report estimating trillions of metric tons of natural hydrogen deposits globally, with a substantial portion potentially extractable for industrial use. The focus is on identifying ideal locations to test the commercial viability of these reserves.
