Degree Apprenticeship Model Proposed to Address U.S. Health Care Talent Shortage
The U.S. health care sector is exploring degree apprenticeships as a solution to the ongoing talent crisis. This model, which combines academic learning with paid on-the-job training, is gaining traction in fields like respiratory therapy and nursing. The U.S. Department of Labor recently recognized respiratory therapy as an apprenticeable occupation, allowing states like Wisconsin to pioneer programs that integrate clinical experience with academic instruction. These apprenticeships aim to provide students with extensive hands-on experience, guided by mentors, to better prepare them for professional roles. Despite initial resistance from accrediting bodies like the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, new standards are being developed to accommodate this educational approach. The model is also being applied to nursing, with states like Alabama and Texas developing programs that allow nursing students to earn wages while completing their clinical training.
