Eni Secures Offshore Exploration Deal in Gambia, Aiming to Assess Petroleum Potential
Italian energy company Eni has signed a petroleum exploration, development, and production license agreement with the Gambian government for Block A1, a deepwater offshore area covering approximately 1,300 square kilometers. This agreement, signed by Gambia’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Nani Juwara, grants Eni the rights to explore the area, which is located in water depths ranging from 1,250 to 3,300 meters. The block is part of the Atlantic Margin, known for significant hydrocarbon discoveries. This marks Eni's first entry into Gambia, providing the country with a new opportunity to evaluate its offshore petroleum potential after previous unsuccessful exploration attempts. The block was previously held by African Petroleum Corporation and later by BP, which exited in 2021 without drilling. Eni's involvement is part of its strategy to diversify its exploration portfolio across proven, emerging, and frontier basins.
