Study Reveals Shift in News Consumption to Social Media Among Younger Americans
A recent study by Evan Shapiro, a media cartographer, highlights a significant shift in news consumption patterns among Americans under the age of 55. The study, conducted from December 2025 to May 2026, reveals that individuals in this age group are increasingly turning to social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok for news, rather than traditional media outlets. For those aged 13-34, TikTok has surpassed YouTube in popularity. In contrast, individuals over 55 continue to rely on local legacy media, such as TV news broadcasts. This trend has prompted local newsrooms in Indianapolis to adapt their strategies, focusing more on social media engagement to reach younger audiences.
