Virginia Governor Signs Law Easing Construction of Tiny Houses to Address Housing Shortage
Governor Abigail Spanberger of Virginia has signed a new law that will make it easier to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs), such as tiny houses, on residential properties. This legislation, effective July 1, 2027, aims to alleviate housing shortages and affordability issues by allowing ADUs to be built by-right in areas zoned for single-family homes. The law caps permit fees at $500 and removes previous restrictions, such as large setback requirements and the need for a family relation between ADU occupants and primary residents. This change is expected to increase housing options and affordability in Virginia, where local zoning laws have previously hindered such developments.
