Global Food Goals Off Track, Only One of 30 Expected to Be Met by 2030
A recent report published in Nature Food by the Food Systems Countdown Initiative (FSCI) reveals that humanity is significantly off track in meeting its internationally agreed food system goals for 2030. Out of 30 defined global targets, only one, mobile phone subscriptions (used as a proxy for social connectedness and food system resilience), is realistically within reach. The report assessed 44 indicators covering various aspects of food systems, including production, transportation, and consumption. Many indicators are moving in the wrong direction, such as civil society participation, government accountability, pesticide use, and ultra-processed food sales. For 22 of the indicators, fewer than a third of the 197 countries included in the report are projected to meet their global target or benchmark by 2030. The global average for greenhouse gas emissions from food systems is more than 75 percent away from its target.
