Maine Ethics Commission Reports Strong Public Support for Campaign Finance Reform Amid Rising Political Spending
The Maine Ethics Commission recently released its third annual report on money in politics, highlighting significant public demand for campaign finance reform. This report, mandated by a new state law, includes public comments from Maine voters, overwhelmingly advocating for the state's congressional delegation to address unlimited and unchecked political spending. The report comes as political spending for the upcoming November election is projected to reach $11.6 billion nationwide, surpassing the 2022 midterm record of $8.9 billion. Maine has already taken steps to curb the influence of money in politics, notably passing a historic referendum in 2023 to ban foreign government spending in state elections. This initiative received 86% support, marking the largest margin of victory for any referendum in Maine's history. The commission's report also outlines various amendments currently being considered in Congress that aim to tackle the issue of political spending.
