Mexico Enforces New Registration Law for Pre-Pay Cell Phone Users
Mexico has enacted a new law requiring all pre-pay cell phone users to register their numbers with a verified ID. This law, effective from January 2026, mandates that users register by June 30, 2026, with unregistered lines facing suspension starting July 1. The government has since revised the registration timeline, focusing on pre-pay users, with staggered disconnection dates based on the last digit of the phone number, from August to December 2026. Contract phone users are exempt from this requirement. The registration process involves providing a government-issued ID, and for foreigners, a valid passport is necessary.
