Americans Increasingly Turn to AI for Tax Assistance, OpenAI Reports
OpenAI has reported a significant increase in the use of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, for tax-related inquiries. In the first quarter of 2026, tax-related searches on ChatGPT were four times higher than in the same period in 2025. The most common queries involved earnings and withholdings, filing forms, and investment and retirement reporting. Despite the rise in AI usage, OpenAI reminds users that ChatGPT is not a substitute for professional tax advice. A survey by Adobe also found that U.S. workers are 136% more likely to use AI for tax filing this year compared to last.
