EEOC Proposes Elimination of Mandatory EEO-1 Workforce Demographic Reporting for Employers
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has put forth a proposal to remove the requirement for covered employers to submit annual workforce demographic information through the EEO-1 Report. This proposed change would significantly reduce a long-standing federal reporting obligation for numerous employers. The EEO-1 Report typically collects data on employees' race, ethnicity, gender, and job categories. While the proposal aims to lessen the administrative burden on businesses, the EEOC emphasizes that employers should still continue to collect and analyze this type of information internally. This internal data collection is crucial for identifying potential risks, conducting compliance analyses, and evaluating workplace practices related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The EEOC's proposal is currently not final, meaning employers are still required to prepare for and comply with the existing EEO-1 reporting requirements until any new regulations are officially implemented.
