Canadian Actress Claire Brosseau Seeks Court Approval for Medically Assisted Suicide Due to Mental Illness
Claire Brosseau, a former actress known for her roles alongside James Franco and Daniel Stern, has filed an emergency motion with a Canadian court seeking permission for medically-assisted suicide. Brosseau, who suffers from severe bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, claims her mental illness has led to 'unrelenting suffering.' Under current Canadian law, medical assistance in dying (MAID) is permitted only for individuals with a 'grievous and irremediable' medical condition, which typically excludes mental illness. This exclusion is set to expire in March 2027, but Brosseau argues she cannot wait that long and is requesting an exemption. Her lawyer, Michael Fenrick, hopes to secure a court date before the summer to address her plea.
