Maryland Lawmakers and Advocates Demand Reforms at PJM Power Grid Operator
Maryland legislators and advocates have called for significant reforms at PJM Interconnection, the largest regional power grid operator in the U.S., during a conference held by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Concerns were raised about PJM's governance structure, which is perceived to favor market participants with financial stakes over the 67 million ratepayers it serves. Maryland State Senator Katie Fry Hester and Delegate Lorig Charkoudian, along with other lawmakers and environmental advocates, are pushing for changes to ensure affordability, reliability, and transparency in PJM's operations. The call for reform follows a controversial energy auction in 2024 that led to significant increases in utility bills for Maryland residents.
