California Lawmakers Consider Lowrider Vanity License Plates to Celebrate Culture and Fund Programs
California lawmakers are evaluating the introduction of new personalized lowrider license plates. This initiative aims to celebrate the cultural significance of lowriders and generate funds for nonprofit causes. Historically, cruising in lowriders was banned in many Californian cities, but recent changes, such as Sacramento's 2022 decision to lift the ban and rename a street 'Lowrider Lane,' reflect a shift in attitude. The proposed plates would require at least 7,500 pre-paid applications at a $50 fee each to be produced. Proceeds from these plates would support lowrider exhibitions, cultural events, and programs preserving lowrider history. The U.S. Postal Service has also recently released commemorative stamps featuring lowrider vehicles, further highlighting the cultural importance of these cars.
