NHTSA Investigates Avride Self-Driving Car Crashes in Texas
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into a series of crashes involving Avride's autonomous vehicles in Texas. The investigation was prompted by concerns over the vehicles' performance, which may indicate excessive assertiveness and insufficient capability, potentially leading to traffic safety violations. The incidents, which include 16 crashes, have resulted in property damage and one minor injury. Avride's vehicles, which operate on Uber's platform, have been providing passenger services in Dallas since December. The company has stated that all vehicles were under the supervision of trained safety operators and that many incidents were caused by other road users. Avride is cooperating with the investigation and has implemented technical and operational mitigations to address the issues.
