Universities Adapt to Declining Computer Science Enrollment with AI Integration
Universities across the United States are witnessing a decline in computer science enrollment, with a reported 8.4% drop in undergraduate enrollment in computer and information sciences at four-year institutions in spring 2026, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. This trend follows a previous 3.6% decline in fall 2025. Despite this, interest in technology remains strong, as students are increasingly seeking to integrate tech knowledge with other fields. Institutions like Colby College in Maine are responding by incorporating AI education across various disciplines. Colby's Davis Institute for Artificial Intelligence, established with a $30 million gift, aims to integrate AI education while addressing ethical considerations. The University of Florida and Ohio State University are also expanding AI-related courses, ensuring students are prepared for a workforce where AI is prevalent.
