UK Universities Allegedly Monitor Pro-Palestine Students, Raising Privacy Concerns
A joint investigation by Al Jazeera English and Liberty Investigates has revealed that twelve UK universities, including prestigious institutions like Oxford and Imperial College London, have allegedly hired Horus Security Consultancy Limited to monitor student activism, particularly pro-Palestine movements. The consultancy, run by former military officials, was reportedly contracted to analyze open-source data, including social media activity, and provide security briefings on campus protests. The investigation claims that universities paid at least £440,000 for these services since 2022. Some universities have defended their actions, stating that the monitoring was for security purposes and did not target individual students.
