Heavy Snow and Avalanche Danger in Western U.S. Mountains
A late-season winter storm is impacting the western United States, bringing heavy mountain snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple winter storm warnings across the northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest. Snowfall totals are expected to reach 1 to 2 feet in the most exposed mountain ranges, including parts of Montana, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska. The storm is causing blowing snow, near-whiteout conditions, and dangerous backcountry travel. Avalanche danger is a significant concern as the snowpack rapidly builds. The NWS has cautioned that backcountry and high-country recreation could become extremely dangerous due to the increased avalanche risk.
