Poll Reveals Extreme Heat's Impact on American Lives and Electricity Bills
A recent poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research highlights the significant impact of extreme heat on Americans' daily lives. The survey indicates that a majority of U.S. adults are experiencing either a major or minor impact from extreme heat on various aspects of their lives, including travel plans, electricity bills, and outdoor activities. The poll shows that about 8 in 10 Americans have noticed an increase in their electricity bills due to the need for more air conditioning. This is a notable rise from 69% in July 2024. The impact is particularly pronounced in the Midwest, where 44% of residents report a major impact on their electricity bills, up from 29% two years ago. The survey also reveals that extreme heat is affecting travel and vacation plans, with around 4 in 10 Americans reporting an impact, up from about one-quarter in 2024.
