New Zealand Faces Cost-of-Living Crisis Amid Inflation and Wage Disparities
Recent data from Stats NZ highlights a significant cost-of-living crisis in New Zealand, where inflation has consistently outpaced wage growth. Over the past few years, inflation surged, particularly in 2021 and 2022, and again recently due to rising fuel prices. This has led to a situation where the cost of necessities has increased, eroding the purchasing power of consumers. Economists like Alexandra Turcu and Shamubeel Eaqub have noted that while wages have increased, they have not kept pace with inflation, leading to a decline in real income for many workers. The labor market remains soft, with high unemployment and few job vacancies, making it difficult for employees to negotiate higher wages. This economic environment has contributed to a persistent feeling of financial pressure among New Zealanders.
