French President Macron Activates EU Support Amid Escalating Wildfires in Cap Ferret
French President Emmanuel Macron has requested the activation of the European Union's civil protection mechanism as wildfires continue to devastate the Cap Ferret peninsula, a popular tourist destination on France's Atlantic Coast. The wildfires have already destroyed over 8,700 hectares, prompting a total evacuation of the area. Reinforcements from Croatia, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia are being deployed to assist in firefighting efforts. The situation is exacerbated by intense heatwaves and drought conditions, which have strained local resources. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that security forces are engaged in a significant battle against the fires.
