Governor Stein Signs Executive Order to Address Housing Affordability in North Carolina
Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has signed an executive order aimed at improving housing opportunities and affordability across the state. This initiative is a response to the increasing costs associated with renting or owning a home, which have become a significant concern for many residents. As part of this effort, Stein has appointed Janneke Ratcliffe, a former Urban Institute official, as a senior advisor for housing policy. Ratcliffe's role will involve working with state, local, and tribal officials to develop and implement strategies to address the housing crisis. The state is currently facing a shortfall of over 750,000 housing units needed by 2029, which predominantly affects low- and moderate-income households. The executive order highlights the urgency of the situation, as many residents are spending more than 30% of their income on housing.
