USSOCOM Expands MC-130J Fleet with Silent Knight Radar Enhancements
The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) has been observed increasing the number of MC-130J Commando II aircraft equipped with the AN/APQ-187 Silent Knight Radar. Recent transits through Glasgow Prestwick Airport in Scotland revealed that six out of seven MC-130J aircraft were fitted with this advanced terrain-following radar. This development is part of USSOCOM's broader initiative to upgrade its entire MC-130J fleet with the Silent Knight Radar, enhancing the aircraft's operational capabilities. The aircraft, which had their serial numbers and identifying marks obscured, were on a route from Elefsina Air Base in Greece to Keflavik in Iceland, suggesting a return from operations in the Middle East. This radar upgrade is significant as it improves the aircraft's ability to navigate challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions, crucial for special operations missions.
