GAO Report Highlights Surge in Amazon and Gig Workers Relying on Federal Assistance
A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report reveals a significant increase in Amazon and gig workers relying on federal assistance programs such as Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In 11 states studied, the number of Amazon employees on these programs nearly tripled from early 2020 to September 2025. Similarly, drivers and couriers for companies like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Grubhub, and Instacart have become major groups of working recipients. The report indicates that these app-based companies now top the list for food stamp users and are among the top three employers for Medicaid enrollees.
