Ontario Government Allocates $7.2 Million for Worker Retraining Amid Algoma Steel Layoffs
Ontario Labour Minister David Piccini announced a $7.2 million funding initiative aimed at retraining workers affected by layoffs at Algoma Steel. The funding, sourced from both federal and provincial governments, is part of the Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response program. This initiative is designed to upskill and retrain workers in Sault Ste. Marie and other areas. Nicolas Willet, a former employee of Algoma Steel, is among those set to benefit from this program, as he begins welding classes at APR Welding Academy. The funding will also support the Canadian Skills Training and Employment Coalition, which will receive over $1.5 million to help 120 manufacturing workers acquire new skills. Additionally, Algoma Steel will receive over $1.4 million to upskill 250 employees, and Confederation College will receive over $2.7 million to assist workers affected by restructuring in the forestry and pulp and paper sectors.
