Ukraine Sanctions Russian 'Masha and the Bear' Cartoon, Citing Propaganda Concerns
Ukraine has imposed sanctions on the producers and distributors of the popular Russian children's cartoon 'Masha and the Bear.' Ukrainian Culture Minister Tetyana Berezhna announced on X that these sanctions create legal grounds to block the content within Ukraine and to engage international platforms to restrict its monetization and distribution. Kyiv views the series as a tool for Russian propaganda, asserting that such content has no place on Ukrainian children's screens. The cartoon, which features a mischievous little girl and a retired circus bear, is widely popular, having been viewed billions of times on YouTube and broadcast in approximately 100 countries. The sanctions, issued via a decree by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, target the Russian studio Animaccord, its founder, and the series' scriptwriter and director. This action follows a previous protest by Ukraine in June against Netflix's acquisition of streaming rights for new seasons of the show.
