Idaho Farmers Brace for Challenging Water Season Amid Low Snowpack
Farmers in southern Idaho, particularly in the Treasure Valley, are preparing for a difficult irrigation season due to low snowpack levels. Richard Durrant, a farmer in southwest Idaho, highlights the severity of the situation, describing it as one of the worst water years he has experienced. The region's agriculture heavily relies on irrigation water sourced from mountain snowpack, which feeds into reservoirs like Lucky Peak, Arrowrock, and Anderson Ranch. As temperatures rise, the melting snow is expected to provide less runoff than usual, impacting water availability for irrigation. This situation is compounded by consecutive dry years, which have prevented reservoirs from fully refilling, posing a significant challenge to the agricultural economy in Idaho.
