Bangladesh Garment Industry Faces Mass Layoffs Amid Export Decline
The garment industry in Bangladesh is experiencing significant layoffs due to declining exports and increased competition from countries like India and Vietnam. Mosammat Aklima, a garment worker, was among 3,000 individuals laid off from Lithe Garments factory, highlighting the industry's struggles. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association reports that approximately 400 factories have closed over the past two years, resulting in tens of thousands of job losses. The industry, which accounts for 80% of Bangladesh's export earnings, is facing challenges in maintaining competitiveness, especially in Europe, where free-trade agreements have favored competitors. The sector employs over 4.5 million people, predominantly women, and is crucial to the country's economy.
