North Carolina has been identified as the worst state for workers in Oxfam America’s 2024 Best and Worst States to Work index. The report evaluates states based on three key standards: wages, worker protections, and the right to organize. According to Kaitlyn Henderson, a senior researcher at Oxfam and the lead author of the index, these standards are either insufficient or nonexistent at the federal level. North Carolina's low ranking is attributed to its almost exclusive reliance on federal standard policies for wages, worker protections, and the right to organize, unlike higher-ranking states such as California, which provides more robust wages and protections. For instance, the federal minimum wage, which North Carolina adheres to, is $7.25 an hour, a rate unchanged since 2009. This is shared with neighboring states like Tennessee and South Carolina, but North Carolina's higher cost of living contributes to its worse score. Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Central North Carolina

The National Weather Service in Raleigh, North Carolina, has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for several counties in central North Carolina, including Southern Orange, Northern Harnett, Lee, Western Wake, Chatham, and Southern Durham. The warning is in effect from October 11 at 11:06 AM EDT until 11:45 AM EDT. At 11:06 AM EDT, severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from 8 miles south of Mebane to near Sanford, moving east at 45 mph. These storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph, which could cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees. The affected areas include Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, and other nearby locations. A Tornado Watch is also in effect for central North Carolina until 5:00 PM EDT.

Isaias and Rachel Bring Flooding and Damage to U.S.

The remnants of Hurricane Isaias and Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel are causing widespread impacts across the United States. Isaias, which made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane near Destin, Florida, has left a trail of destruction, including power outages for over 356,000 customers in southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Meanwhile, Rachel has brought significant coastal flooding and high waves to Southern California, with water levels reaching 1.5 feet above predictions. In western North Carolina, heavy rainfall from Isaias has caused rivers to overflow, leading to flash flooding and landslides. Tornadoes are also possible in parts of Virginia and North Carolina, while dangerous surf and rip currents are expected along the Gulf and southeastern Atlantic coasts.
