Mississippi Narcotics Unit Urges Ban on Synthetic Kratom Following Ole Miss Student Deaths
Law enforcement in Mississippi, specifically the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics unit, is advocating for state lawmakers to ban synthetic kratom. This call to action follows the deaths of two Ole Miss students last week, 18-year-old Aidan Hamilton and 20-year-old Robert Strang, who are suspected to have died from overdoses. While toxicology tests are still pending, court documents indicate that both students purchased SMAX Pseudo-DHM pills, a chemically manipulated product, days before their deaths. Investigators found packaging of the suspected substance at the scene and subsequently issued a public warning about kratom. Hamilton reportedly made multiple purchases at Puffs Vape Tobacco and Beer in Oxford, leading to the arrest of two employees and the seizure of 500 units of kratom.
