Boston Symphony Orchestra's Financial Health Misrepresented by CEO Chad Smith
Chad Smith, CEO of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), has been criticized for his statements regarding the orchestra's financial health. Financial analyst Thomas W. Dinsmore has fact-checked Smith's claims, revealing inaccuracies in his portrayal of the BSO's financial status. Despite Smith's assertions of consistent deficits, the BSO has recorded 13 surpluses and 7 deficits over the past 20 years. The orchestra's financial statements indicate a cumulative tax accounting surplus of $117 million and a GAAP accounting surplus of $391 million. Additionally, the BSO's unrestricted endowment stands at just under $66 million, with $40 million in net current assets, contradicting Smith's claims of financial decline.
