Rep. Moran Introduces American Shipyard Investment Act to Boost U.S. Shipbuilding
U.S. Representative Nathaniel Moran has introduced the 'American Shipyard Investment Act of 2026' to incentivize shipbuilding in the United States. The bill proposes a 25% tax credit for shipbuilders to address national security and regulatory concerns. Moran highlighted the disparity in shipbuilding between the U.S. and China, noting that China had 1,794 ships under construction in 2022 compared to just five in the U.S. He attributes the decline in U.S. shipbuilding to excessive regulatory burdens that hinder competition with countries like China, South Korea, and Japan. Economist Dr. Ray Perryman supports the bill, citing supply chain constraints and labor costs as additional challenges. The bill aims to create jobs and strengthen the U.S. maritime industry.
