Indonesian Authorities Retrieve Bodies After Mount Dukono Eruption Kills Three Hikers
Rescue teams in Indonesia have recovered the bodies of two Singaporean hikers who were caught in a volcanic eruption on Mount Dukono, located on the remote island of Halmahera. The eruption, which occurred on Friday, resulted in the deaths of three hikers, including an Indonesian woman whose body was found earlier. The hikers were part of a group of 20 who defied safety restrictions to ascend the 1,355-meter volcano. The eruption spewed a thick ash column approximately 10 kilometers into the air, complicating rescue efforts. Seventeen hikers were evacuated safely, with some suffering minor burns. The search and rescue operation, involving nearly 100 personnel, faced challenges due to the ongoing volcanic activity and difficult terrain. The bodies of the victims have been transported to a local hospital for identification.
