Orexin Neurons Key to Understanding Motivation in the Brain
Researchers at Nagoya University have discovered that orexin neurons play a crucial role in regulating motivated behavior. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, used genetically modified rats to explore how these neurons influence motivation. By activating orexin neurons, researchers observed increased motivation in rats to obtain food rewards, while degeneration of these neurons led to decreased motivation. The study utilized chemogenetics and fiber photometry to measure neuron activity, revealing that orexin neurons are active when anticipating rewards and increase in activity with greater effort required. This research provides insights into how the brain translates reward expectations into sustained action.
