New York Attorney General Seeks Dismissal of St. John’s University Lawsuit Against Labor Board
The New York Attorney General's office has requested a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by St. John’s University. The university is suing the New York Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) after withdrawing recognition from its two faculty unions, which have been in place for 56 years. St. John's President Brian Shanley stated that the university's Catholic-centered mission was hindered by the collective bargaining relationship. Following the university's action, the unions filed unfair labor practice charges against St. John's. The university then sued PERB, seeking to block the board from processing these charges. The Attorney General's office argues that the federal court should not intervene in ongoing PERB proceedings, citing precedent, and contends that the university's claims of potential harm are hypothetical.
