Michigan Faces Severe Weather Challenges Amid Climate Concerns
Michigan has experienced a surge in extreme weather events, including 33 tornadoes last year—more than double the state’s annual average of 15. This year, 15 tornadoes have already been recorded, including an EF-3 tornado in March, the earliest of its kind in state history. Severe flooding has also plagued the state, with dam failures and evacuations in areas like Cheboygan. Experts attribute these events to climate change, citing increased jet stream activity and temperature contrasts between the Great Lakes and Gulf moisture. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials are currently assessing damage across 30 counties, while local communities face significant economic and social impacts.
