Solomon Islands Prime Minister to Review China Security Treaty Amid Regional Concerns
The new Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Matthew Wale, has announced plans to review the country's security treaty with China. This treaty, originally signed in 2022 by the former Prime Minister, has raised concerns in the United States and among allies such as Australia, due to fears it could allow the Chinese navy to establish a base in the South Pacific. Wale, who recently assumed office, has called for the details of the treaty to be made public. He mentioned that he only received a copy of the treaty last week after making changes in key positions within his administration. During his first overseas visit to Australia, Wale and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese discussed negotiating a new treaty to enhance bilateral relations, focusing on security and economic issues. Albanese emphasized that Australia should be the primary security partner for the Solomon Islands.
