NAACP Sues Elon Musk's xAI Over Alleged Air Pollution Violations in Memphis
The NAACP has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, accusing it of violating the Clean Air Act. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi, claims that xAI and its subsidiary, MZX Tech, LLC, installed and operated 27 natural gas-burning turbines in Southaven, Mississippi, without the necessary air permits. These turbines are used to power data centers in and around Memphis, Tennessee. The NAACP argues that the emissions from these turbines pose health risks to nearby communities, which have a higher proportion of Black residents compared to the national average. The organization is seeking legal action to halt the operation of the Colossus Gas Plant until proper permits are obtained and pollution controls are implemented.
