Rutgers–Newark Students and Alum Document Newark Designer Brand's Story
Rutgers–Newark graduate Anya Dillard, along with current students and alumni, has directed a short documentary titled 'Atelier: The Story of BrownMill Company.' This film chronicles the journey of a Newark-based designer brand known for its nouveau preppy streetwear, which has gained recognition through clients including NBA players and Idris Elba. Dillard, who previously gave a TEDx Talk at Harvard University, views filmmaking as a continuation of her activism. The project, supported by a Gucci Changemakers Creative Fellowship, involved a collaboration between Dillard and her classmates from the Rutgers–Newark Video Production Program. The film highlights themes of brotherhood, Black ownership, and the role of art in community building, while also showcasing Newark in a positive light, challenging stereotypes.
