St. Mary's County Faces Challenges in Building Sports Complex at Current Site
St. Mary's County's proposed sports complex cannot be fully constructed at the current site due to environmental and infrastructure constraints, according to Ray Bivens, the county's Recreation and Parks director. The complex, intended to address local demand for athletic facilities and attract sports tourism, was presented to county commissioners last month. The design includes multipurpose fields, baseball and softball diamonds, pickleball courts, and a large indoor sports facility. However, significant site improvements, including stormwater facilities and a bridge, are required, driving up costs. The site is affected by wetlands, streams, and flood zones, and lacks public water and sewer connections. Despite these challenges, the planning work is considered valuable, and the county is exploring public-private partnerships and alternative locations.
