Louisiana Enacts Stricter Penalties for Marijuana Use on College Campuses
Louisiana has implemented a new state law, Act 305, which significantly increases penalties for smoking marijuana within 2,000 feet of college campuses or any school. Signed by Governor Jeff Landry, this legislation targets marijuana use on university grounds, including Louisiana State University (LSU). While smoking marijuana in these areas was already illegal, the new law escalates the potential consequences to include up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. This move is part of a broader effort to crack down on illicit drug use in educational environments. LSU spokesperson Meg Casper Sunstrom confirmed that the university maintains a drug-free campus policy and will enforce the new law, though specific enforcement mechanisms will not be publicly disclosed. The university also prohibits cigarettes, vapes, lighters, weapons, and other illicit drugs on campus.
