Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Resigns Amid Ethics Investigation Over FEMA Fund Misuse
Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida resigned from Congress just before the House Ethics Committee was set to decide on sanctions related to allegations of theft and misconduct. She is accused of misappropriating nearly $5 million in FEMA funds for her campaign, charges to which she has pleaded not guilty. Her resignation preempted a likely expulsion from the House, which would have required a two-thirds vote. The Ethics Committee had previously found substantial evidence supporting the allegations, including improper campaign finance reports and misuse of funds for luxury items.
