Hampshire College Announces Closure Amid Financial Struggles, Impacting Students and Faculty
Hampshire College, a liberal arts institution in Amherst, Massachusetts, has announced its closure after nearly six decades of operation. The college, known for its unconventional educational model, has faced persistent financial difficulties, including a declining student population and failed land sale. Despite efforts to increase enrollment and raise funds, the college could not overcome its financial challenges. The New England Commission of Higher Education had threatened to withdraw accreditation due to concerns over the college's resources. Current students can continue classes through the fall semester, but newly admitted students will receive refunds. The college plans to hold its final commencement ceremonies in May and December.
