Heavy Rain Causes Austin Flight Delays, School Changes
Heavy rainfall has disrupted travel and activities in Austin, Texas, as thunderstorms continue to impact the region. Rainfall totals ranged from 1 to 2 inches, with Austin-Bergstrom International Airport recording 0.90 inches, breaking its daily record. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a ground delay program, causing significant flight delays averaging over two hours, with some delays reaching up to nine hours. By Thursday afternoon, 327 flights were delayed, and 29 were canceled. Local schools, including the Austin Independent School District, canceled after-school activities, while Eanes ISD adjusted event schedules. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist overnight, increasing the risk of localized flooding, particularly in areas with already saturated ground. Austin Pets Alive! is also preparing for potential flooding by seeking temporary foster homes for shelter animals.
