State of Emergency Declared in Wellington Due to Severe Flooding
Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, is experiencing severe flash flooding, prompting a state of emergency declaration. The floods have resulted in the evacuation of more than a dozen people, and a 60-year-old man from the Karori suburb is reported missing. The flooding follows closely on the heels of Cyclone Vainau, which impacted the North Island less than a week ago. The city has been inundated with a record 77mm (3 inches) of rain in less than an hour, causing significant disruptions. Vehicles have been submerged, trees uprooted, and houses affected by landslides. Local authorities are urging residents to stay indoors as more rain is expected over the next day and a half.
