Prebiotics Show Modest Impact on Weight Loss and Gut Health in Human Trials
Prebiotics, defined as nondigestible food components that selectively support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, have demonstrated a modest but real effect on weight loss and waist circumference in human clinical trials. Unlike probiotics, which introduce live microorganisms, prebiotics serve as nutrients for existing beneficial bacteria in the digestive system. Research indicates that prebiotic fiber supplementation can lead to an average weight reduction of approximately 0.97 kg and a decrease in waist circumference of about 1.03 cm. The primary prebiotic fibers studied include inulin, oligofructose, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galactooligosaccharides, resistant starch, and resistant dextrins.
