Washington State Panel Recommends $1 Million Restoration for Capitol Vandalism Damage
A state panel in Washington has recommended a $1 million restoration project to repair damages caused by vandalism at the state Capitol. The most significant expense involves restoring a historic wool rug in the state Reception Room, estimated to cost $959,000, including $240,000 for shipping to New York for repairs. The vandalism, which occurred on October 5, involved Gunnar Schubert, who allegedly broke into the Capitol, causing extensive damage, including burning flags and a piano. Schubert faces charges of second-degree burglary and third-degree malicious mischief, but his trial is pending due to questions about his mental fitness. The restoration project awaits funding from the Legislature or insurance reimbursement, with $250,000 already approved by lawmakers.
