Federal Judge Halts Most Arrests by Federal Agents at NYC Immigration Courts
A U.S. District Judge, P. Kevin Castel, has ruled to stop federal agents from making arrests without exceptional circumstances in and around three Manhattan buildings where immigration proceedings occur. This decision halts a practice initiated under the Trump administration, which allowed agents to detain individuals attending immigration court. The ruling was made in response to a lawsuit filed by the New York Civil Liberties Union, the American Civil Liberties Union, and other organizations. The judge emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to attend removal proceedings and pursue asylum claims without fear of arrest. The decision applies specifically to immigration courts at 26 Federal Plaza, 201 Varick Street, and 290 Broadway in Manhattan.
