Study Finds Prebiotics May Alleviate Knee Osteoarthritis Pain
A recent study published in the journal Nutrients has found that prebiotic supplements, specifically inulin, may help reduce pain and improve grip strength in individuals with knee osteoarthritis. The study involved a six-week clinical trial with 117 adults divided into four groups: one receiving a daily prebiotic supplement, another undergoing a digital physiotherapy-supported exercise program, a third group combining both treatments, and a control group receiving a placebo. Results indicated that those taking the prebiotic supplement experienced significant pain reduction and improved grip strength. However, the study's small size and incomplete participant follow-through suggest that further research is needed to confirm these findings and understand the biological mechanisms involved.
